My children are very different in disposition and body type. As I sat down to prepare for summer, I realized that their physiological needs are very different as well. We all need exercise, but we all have different needs. What are the best activities for each of my children?
I turned to my friend, Alex Mathisen, yoga instructor and owner of the Yoga Center of Steamboat for guidance. She provided me with some materials from the ancient natural medical practice of Ayurveda. I am a big believer in utilizing wisdom from various schools of thought so I decided to do some exploring. The Chopra Center has a wonderful website that is engaging and chock full of information. To check it out yourself, go to www.chopra.com. I utilized several pages from that website to write this article.
I learned that there are three Doshas (life forces) based on the elements that constitute our nature. Vata (wind), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth). Although we are generally made up of a combination of the Doshas, one is usually more predominant.
A brief description of the different temperaments are as follows:
VATA: Thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable.
PITTA: Intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented with a strong appetite for life.
KAPHA: Easy-going, methodical and nurturing.
After gathering some information, I called a family meeting and each of us took the Dosha Quiz. Each of us discussed the summer activities that we thought would be best for our individual needs. The whole process was really helpful.
Nature's Formulary provides a free Dosha Quiz and quickly tallies the results. If you and your family would like to determine your Dosha, click on www.naturesformulary.com/contents/dosha-test.
Once you have determined your Dosha, The Chopra Center recommends the following exercises for each type.
VATA: Engage in exercises that involve fluid, calming movements such as rowing, yoga, rollerblading, dance, walking, swimming, and Tai Chi. Include weight training to increase strength and build muscle. Exercise outside when possible and try activities such as golfing, canoeing, hiking and cycling.
PITTA: Engage in cooling and calming activities such as swimming, kayaking, surfing and paddle boarding. Pitta is naturally competitive. Try tennis, basketball and racquetball. Exercise outside when possible.
KAPHA: Exercise every day. Engage in invigorating activities such as running, cycling, swimming and dancing. Aim for 45-60 minutes per day and be sure to break a sweat. Kapha may also enjoy competitive sports or outdoor activities that include a level of risk such as rock climbing, sea kayaking or white-water rafting.
As we transition from Spring to Summer, it is important to remember not to over-schedule our children or ourselves. Be sure to leave time for unstructured play and family time so you can all truly enjoy the simple pleasures this season has to offer.
