Many students exhibit characteristics of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Sensory Over-Responsivity. These children often hold the belief that something is wrong with them, particularly if they struggle with executive functions such as sustained attention, response inhibition and emotional control. Their feeling of “scatteredness” often overshadows the fact that they are quite often bright.
New York Times best-selling author, radio talk show host and former psychotherapist, Thom Hartmann, is well-known for his book, “Attention Deficit Disorder: A New Perception.” In this book, Hartmann presents a refreshing explanation of ADHD characteristics that he calls the “Hunter-Farmer Hypothesis.” Hartmann’s hypothesis suggests that characteristics typically associated with ADHD are actually evolutionary adaptations that were beneficial to ancient hunter-gatherer societies, but do not easily fit into the elements of our modern day world.
“The Young Hunter” began as a story that was read to children, who exhibited ADHD characteristics and Sensory Over-Responsivity, during the course of counseling. Children responded so positively to the concept that Tina Harlow decided to create a video of the story.
“The Young Hunter” combines the powerful medium of storytelling with whiteboard animation to communicate this hypothesis in a way that students can understand. This method externalizes the issues, providing students with the emotional distance they need to reflect upon the information and apply it to their own lives.
“The Young Hunter,” featuring music by Arthur Lee Land, is a 9-minutes video for students in grades K-8 who exhibit characteristics of ADHD (combined or hyperactive types) or Sensory Over-Responsivity.
