This week we focus on a segment of the gifted community that continues to face a great deal of adversity - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) kids. We turn to Educator and LGBTQ Advocate, Dr. Terry Friedrichs, for guidance. Dr. Friedrichs is the Founder of Friedrichs Education in St. Paul, Minnesota. His center provides assessment, instruction, advocacy, and research for gifted, special needs, and twice-exceptional youth, some of whom are LGBTQ.
Dr. Friedrichs reports that some research studies have found that "approximately 30% of gifted kids are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning." It is important that we, as a community, prioritize efforts to help these children embrace their future.
In this video, Dr. Friedrichs provides parents with suggestions for raising children in an LGBTQ-affirmative environment. This is from Dr. Friedrich's section of the FREE collaborative ebook, "Helping Gifted Kids Thrive: Insights from the Experts." Dr. Friedrichs can be reached at www.friedrichseducation.com.
