Autumn is here. School is back in session, the seasons are changing and anxiety is in the air! This time of transition impacts adults as well as children. In the midst of the daily pressures, we forget that we have a natural calming agent at our fingertips: MUSIC.
One recent study found that music reduces pain and anxiety in children (Nguyen, Nilsson, HellstrÖm and Bengtson, 2010). This study, published in the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, researched the effects of music on the pain and anxiety levels of children with cancer who were undergoing a lumbar puncture. The study found that when the children listened to their favorite music with earphones on, "the music reduced pain scores, heart rate, respiratory rate, and anxiety scores."
When our children are feeling anxious, it often manifests as frustration or anger. Their emotions impact our emotions and pretty soon everyone is off-kilter. Providing children with calming or uplifting music and a little alone time can be good medicine. Try Bach, Vivaldi or even Pharrell Williams.
As a tribute to the incredible power of music, enjoy this video of Syrian refugee children dancing to the song, "Happy."
