January is the biggest time of year for goal-setting. Goals are great and help us to set intentions for the year ahead. However, character development is rarely a part of this process.
In this week’s vlog post below, I offer a suggestion to help our children focus on who they ARE instead of what they DO by utilizing The Virtues Project. This project was founded in 1991 by three Canadians to counteract violence and has been recognized by the United Nations as a “model global program for families of all cultures.” It is now being used by individuals, organizations, schools and communities in over 100 countries to awaken the virtues of character. The Virtues Project is based on 52 virtues which serve to bring out the best in ourselves and our children.
In believe so much in this project that I have placed a large poster of the 52 virtues on my refrigerator as a reminder to my family of the gifts of character that lie within all of us. It is my hope that these meaningful words will eventually become a natural part of our vocabulary. If you are interested, the posters and other items are available on The Virtues Project website which is www.virtuesproject.com. (Please know that I do not receive any compensation to promote this project).
Parenting gifted children is hard. Sometimes, in our frustration, it is difficult to see the good in them. The 52 Virtues provides us the language for identifying the good in our children as well as ourselves.
Have a great week!
