dis·il·lu·sion·ment
noun
1. a feeling of disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as good as one believed it to be.

A middle-school boy
An insatiable appetite
for the written word

A sensitive boy
feeling deeply
Words are not just words
They are stories
Of pain

He reads
He feels
He experiences
He hurts
He sleeps

He forgets his lunch
He skips his homework

You see
homework doesn't matter
when you are facing
lies
injustice
suffering
through the eyes
of broken strangers

Perpetrator:  fellow homo sapien

Why aren't you doing your homework?
What's wrong with you?
Unmotivated
Lazy
Go to school

"Pain!"

Can we understand
without rushing in
To resolve
To fix
To take away

Removing the pain
removes opportunity
for growth

We don't mean to teach avoidance
We don't mean to teach dependence
But we do

So we bravely step back
with our hand to our mouth
We resist blame
and it's gradual destruction

We allow the pain
We provide space
for a child's integrity and courage
to emerge
in preparation
for disillusionments
that lie ahead

After the quiet
We teach that disillusionment
is a part of life
Reminding us of our humanity
Challenging our expectations
Beckoning us to forgive others
so we may forgive ourselves

He will choose his response.

Freeze with bitterness
or
transform into a more intricate version of himself
