There are so many types of education available to children right now. Many children thrive in the pubic school setting, but there are some who do not. The traditional school environment may not be conducive to the child's learning style. Sometimes children experience bullying by their peers or are averse to work to which they cannot find meaning. There are a variety of reasons why children may struggle to the point that they cease making gains in the school setting. When a child has reached this point, it may be time to consider alternative options.
Homeschooling is not for everyone, but it is certainly an option on the table. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Education, in 2007, there were an estimated 1.5 million children being homeschooled and it is believed that the number is on the rise.
Some parents choose homeschooling simply to expose their children to travel or other opportunities that otherwise might not be available. Others choose it for cultural or religious reasons. Whatever the reason, each family must make the educational choice that is right for their own child.
This is not always easy. Parents feel a great deal of pressure, not only from the school system, but other parents as well. Some feel that they will be ostracized from their community if they make this choice which only compounds the difficulty of the decision.
I recently met Caleb Page with www.homeschool-curriculum.org at a conference in Dallas. In talking with him, I realized he could be a good resource for parents who are considering homeschool as an educational option for their child. So I interviewed him for my vlog post this week! Caleb’s site provides answers to a myriad of questions surrounding the option of homeschooling.
I serve as president of a public school board, but believe that that no one option meets the need of all the people. Let us support one another and the choices that each of us make for our children. In the end, we all just want our children to thrive.
